Davidson Chalmers Stewart – Legal Advisers to the Agritourism Sector

Many of my happiest childhood memories come from times spent on family farms. Whether I was helping with sheep and cattle, driving tractors, or carrying out less popular chores such as roguing or stone picking, my interest was piqued.

Agriculture is repeatedly recognised to be one of the most challenging sectors to work in. What I have always admired is those in the industry having the continued resilience and drive to adapt to market conditions.

What that leads to is ingenuity. The Scottish Agritourism Conference 2022 was inspiring. I was grateful to have the opportunity to listen to the members, and their individual stories of their businesses as well as their future plans and aspirations. The underlying theme was the passion that members had for their businesses, but also the need to provide as much opportunity as possible for the generations to follow. This desire to drive forward was however inextricably linked with an innate love of the land and environmental consciousness.

I find working in the rural business sector genuinely exciting. I always take the time to speak to clients about what is happening on their land seasonally. Understanding a client’s business in detail is essential in order to provide specific and appropriate legal advice. Recognising a client’s immediate aspirations but also the longer-term intentions and what the impact may be on the wider business is critical. Whether it is smaller scale domestic or large infrastructure projects, the rural business team at Davidson Chalmers Stewart is adept at helping businesses and business people to understand risk and reward, and to make sound commercial decisions.
