Farm: Bain farm, in Sandwick Orkney. A dairy farm, milking about 120 cows twice a day, with a herd of Fleckviehs, dual purpose breed. Two heifers were imported from Austria in 2010, with a further four following later that year. Today the herd is about 90% Fleckvieh.
Agritourism: The Orkney Dairy. In 2017, Lara diversified the farm into making produce from the unique herd of Fleckvieh cattle. After a good few years of hard work The Orkney Dairy is selling milkshakes, yogurt, and cheese, as well as baking and hot chocolate bombs from an honesty shop on the farm and through local shops in Orkney.
I work alongside my parents Willie and Kirstin Hourie, and brother David Hourie in running our family dairy farm. We just joined Scottish Agritourism in 2023 and love being involved with a lot of like minded businesses!
