My family run a berry farm in Blairgowrie, and I started working back at the farm in 2022 to look at our diversification opportunities, with tourism being a key focus. I was excited to gain a place in the 2023 Scottish Agritourism Under 35s program to learn more about the industry and to help inspire changes within our family business. The program involved a day of training, a day at the Scottish Parliament, and two immersive days at the Scottish Agritourism Conference. The opportunity to spend the 4 days with Caroline, her team and 26 other passionate program members was fantastic.
The day spent at the Scottish Parliament was great. Previously, the idea of influencing policy and making a tangible impact felt like an impossible challenge. However, engaging with Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) and civil servants during the program changed that perception. Caroline Millar’s determination to empower young people in the sector served as an inspiration, making the prospect of driving change seem not only possible but also crucial.
Speaking to MSPs and civil servants provided a platform to voice concerns and advocate for positive change. It was a testament to the program’s commitment to nurturing a generation of agritourism leaders who can actively contribute to shaping policies that safeguard the industry’s future.
A highlight of the program was undoubtedly the two days at the Scottish Agritourism Conference. Here, I found myself pushed beyond my comfort zone as I took to the stage to share my family’s business story and the experience of the program. Speaking openly about the challenges facing our agricultural community was daunting, but it was good to raise awareness and spark conversations that hopefully can lead to meaningful solutions.
I am filled with gratitude for the invaluable experiences and connections the program provided, and I would highly recommend it to other Under 35’s should the opportunity arise again.
