Session 2 – Sustainability of the Family Farm & Croft
The Duncan Family Farms farming business was initially started by first generation farming brothers, Ian & Henry Duncan back in the 1950’s when Inveruglas farm on Loch Lomondside was purchased from Luss Estates. It has grown over the years since to include Blairfad & Lands of Drumhead Farms near Drymen. Our three farms now cover approximately 6000 acres, with ground ranging from 365ft to 3000ft above sea level and are currently run entirely by the family.
Shona farms alongside her husband Bruce, his father & his father’s cousin & has been a partner in the family farming business since they married in 1993. Shona, a farmer’s daughter originally from Kippen, has always enjoyed working with animals and now manages the sheep flocks at the three farms, while Bruce manages their suckler beef herd.
In 2019 the Duncan Family entered into agritourism by starting to sell their own meat to local customers, alongside putting in two glamping pods. This has led to guests having the ability to stay on farm and taste some of their produce during their stay. The family business has since developed part of a steading into a self-catering unit and is in the process of expanding the number of self-catering properties on the farms.
In her spare time Shona enjoys socialising with friends, walking her three working collies & cycling. She has a keen interest in promoting locally produced food & currently sits on the board of Forth Valley Food & Drink.
